I just finished making one of our grown son’s bedrooms into a guest room and I came up with quite a list.
Even when I was sure the room was complete and had everything a guest would need, there was one essential thing that was forgotten.
Check out the makeover post and see the before and afters. Don’t you just love before and afters?
I will link as much as I can at the end of the post.
The first guest was our son and he said it was a perfect guest room and very luxurious. It used to be his room, so that made me happy.
Our daughter was our second guest and she came up with one more essential thing every guest room needs.
I will tell you all of the essentials I came up with and save what I forgot for the end. See if you can think of it as you read through the list.
Don’t skip to the end to see. 😉
Let’s get to the list.
First, and probably most important, make sure it is clean. Since no one will be using the room day to day, be sure to clean, vacuum and dust everything a day or two before your guests arrive.
Be sure to dust the fan or light fixture too.
I usually forget that.
Put clean sheets and blankets on the bed. Make sure they are soft and comfy.
Have extra blankets or throws available. Again, soft clean and comfy.
Have multiple pillow choices. From soft to firm.
Make sure there is space in the closet to hang clothes.
You may check out the wallpapered closet doors here.
Also, have a luggage rack for their suitcase.
Bedside tables to set a drink or a book are definitely needed. Be sure to have a light your guest can reach while in bed, so they can turn it off without getting out of bed.
Flowers, but make sure your guests are not allergic.
A soft quilt and a fluffy dog. 😉
Put some plants in your guest room. They make the air fresher and look pretty too.
A mirror or two are very nice. I think a full length one is preferred if you only have one.
You will need some fluffy towels. I bought new ones and will only use those for guests. That way they are always nice. I like to get white towels so they can be bleached. For this guest room I did get some pale blue ones too.
Get some fluffy washcloths too. Be sure to get some black or gray ones for makeup removal.
Then you need a basket of some kind for your new fluffy towels and washcloths.
You will also need some snacks and goodies your guests might like. Then, get a nice basket for them.
Put a nice little trash can near those snacks.
Keep going. There are even more essentials.
Place a tiny fridge on the dresser for their favorite drinks.
A chair with a throw.
Something unique. Such as a Flamingo lamp. 😀
If you have any out of town guests, get some brochures for any must visit locations.
The wifi password. Our guests were our children, so they already have it.
I didn’t put a tv in our guest room. It may be a must have for your guests though.
A fan. Since I replaced the ceiling fan with a light fixture, I made sure to have a fan available for them to use.
Nightlight in the bedroom, hallway or bath. Or maybe all three.
A soft rug under and beside the bed.
Kleenex on one of the bedside tables.
Have you figured out what essential I forgot?
It was a hook. Something to hang a coat, a towel or even clothes.
Whoops!
There are two things I forgot!
There isn’t a basket for the extra pillows either. I just let our guests know they could throw the extra pillows on the floor. It is clean after all.
That’s what I do in our bedroom too. The extra pillows go right on the floor.
Let me know if you came up with any other essentials things every guest room needs.
