You won’t believe how easy it is to update your old ugly ceiling fan!
From this….
To This….
In Just a Few Easy Steps
Do you want to know how I did it?
If you have been following me, you know I want to remove all of our bedroom ceiling fans and replace them with light fixtures.
This is one of my favorites light fixtures!
You can see this and some of my other choices here.
I decided to leave the ceiling fan in the master bedroom and will put small table fans like this or this or this in the guest rooms. The last one is my favorite! Unless I find something more amazing.
I was so over the beige fan light and dark fan blades and could not find a fan with a pretty light fixture.
Then! It came to me!
Find a beautiful light fixture and just change that!
Oh! and paint the fan to lighten it up.
Am I a genius or what?!
Tip:
Look for a light fixture that attaches the same way as your fan fixture.
Let me show you what I did and how incredibly easy and inexpensive this is.
First I gathered the supplies …
- Primer
- Paint
- Drop Cloth
- Duster
- Gloves
- Paint Brushes
- Tape – didn’t end up using it
- Not shown is alcohol that I used to wipe the fan down after dusting it. Dust was going everywhere 😳
- (the paint, primer, drop cloth and brushes were gifted to me from Behr paint at a conference I attended)
Don’t forget a fan to keep the fumes down and I also needed my trusty side kick Dolli nearby. She was loving the fan!
Then I took off the old light cover and primed everything.
It already looks much better!
The primer dried super fast so I went ahead and painted everything and put the light bulbs in and turned the fan on.
I was so excited at this point that I went ahead and put the new light cover on. The pieces from the original fan light cover were used to attach the new one. I had to paint those since the original pieces were brown.
I couldn’t even wait until they were dry so my fingerprints are on them!
Who cares!
It turned out even better than I expected!
Look at it with the lights dimmed! Gah!!!
Are you excited with me?
Here it is while I’m laying on the bed.
Turning it off and on just so I could oooh and awwww over it!
My favorite view!!
I need to let you know I am definitely not an expert by any means. This is just what worked for me.
Do you have an old ugly ceiling fan you want to update?
If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments.
Let me know if you try this so I can celebrate with you!
Have a lovely day friends!

Looks great! When I was a pre-teen I was allowed to paint my ceiling fan- I used metallic blue on the blades and painted stars in glow in the dark paint. I thought it was the coolest 🙂

I didn’t see this before I took down my old ceiling fan. Now it’s in multiple parts. What type of fixture did you use? Can it be a flush mount? Semi flush mount?
Linda says
I don’t think it will matter. Just make sure the actual light cover attaches the same way your fan light cover attaches. I just used the light cover and recycled the rest of the new light fixture.
