Let me show you how to inexpensively update an old ugly laundry sink!
I seriously thought about replacing this sink when I was refreshing the laundry room.
Take a look and you will see why!
How disgusting is that?
I looked everywhere for a new one and once again I could not find exactly what I wanted.
The newer sinks looked exactly the same. They were just clean!
I tried everything to get it clean.
Nothing worked!
There was paint that had spilled on it years ago and would not come off!
That’s when the light bulb went off!
If it is that much trouble to get the paint off….
Why can’t I just freshen it up with a new coat of paint?
I can!
And I did!
Let me show you how.
Just so you know…
I am not a professional. This is just what I did and what worked for me.
I figured if it worked for awhile … great!
If not … well, it’s just paint and a little time lost.
So, Here goes..
This is one of the first things I completed when I did the laundry room refresh with the One Room Challenge.
I had already taken the faucet off and scrubbed all I could. So, my next step was to sand the whole thing lightly. Even the legs.
- Rinse
- Dry
- Wipe every surface with alcohol – let that evaporate and dry
- Prime – let dry
- Paint – let that dry overnight
I couldn’t wait!
I had my son go ahead and install the new faucet a couple hours after painting.
That faucet has a pull out sprayer that is so nice!
Since I have been going gold spray paint crazy lately, I just knew this sink NEEDED gold legs!
I sprayed them gold before I primed and painted the sink. Just hold up a piece of scrap cardboard against the sink so the gold wouldn’t get on the sink.
This is is the spray paint I’ve been going crazy with.
Make sure you have the windows open and a fan to keep the fumes down.
It goes super fast so you won’t be there long.
Look at those legs!
I was going to put a sink skirt on but changed my mind when I saw how good the legs looked.
You can’t cover those up!
Another before…..
And another after…
If you have an ugly old sink that you would like to update inexpensively…
Here are a few of the things I used.
I found a similar mirror and basket.
Also, I linked a whole new sink with faucet that you would just need to paint the legs gold to get the same look!

What kind of paint did you use on the basin?
Linda says
Behr Ultra Paint and primer all in one in the Satin finish. Ultra Pure White. So far it has held up great.
Mallory says
How had it held up so far within the sink? We have one like this and I hate it and want to update it but a new one isn’t feasible right now.
Linda says
Hey Mallory,
I’m so sorry it took me so long to respond. Some how I didn’t see the message.
The sink has held up great! I do have to say I don’t use it all that much though. When I give my little dog a bath in it, I put a towel down. I think it makes her feel more secure and I don’t want to take a change that her claws might scratch the paint.
I think it is a wonderful and inexpensive fix!
Let me know if you try it.
Thanks so much!
Linda

What kind of paint did you use for the inside of the sink?
Linda says
I used the Kilz interior/exterior primer first and then just the plain old Behr with primer satin white. Just the stock color you can grab off the shelf.I figured if it didn’t hold up I would search for a new sink later, but it has held up great! When I give our dog a bath I put a towel down so her claws don’t come in contact with it. Let me know if you do yours.

You painted the inside of sink? Did you need special paint?
Linda says
Hi, I did paint the inside and outside. I just used regular Kilz indoor/outdoor primer first. Let that dry, then a couple coats of Behr paint with primer. It has held up great so far. I don’t let water sit in and when I give my little dog a bath, I put a towel down just to make sure her claws don’t scrape it. I went for it because when I was trying to clean it, the paint that was in there wouldn’t come off no matter what I did. Let me know if you give it a try.

Hi there! I should paint my sink. it’s at least as bad as yours was! i read through the whole post, I see the kilz primer you used, but what paint did you use on top of that? Or is it just the Kilz?
And now that it’s been a while, how is that paint holding up? THANKS!
