Well, the first thing you will need to makeover an antique armoire, is an armoire.
I guess it doesn’t need to be an antique.
I was just lucky that my husband inherited one from his grandmother.
Any armoire you like will do. Just find one you like the shape of and let the makeover begin.
The one I have was originally black. I immediately painted it hunter green, my husband’s favorite color, and changed out the hardware. It looked great and we lived with it like that for years.
I used it in my scrapbook / craft room and filled it to the brim with all kinds of crafty goodness.
It was so heavy that I had to empty all of the drawers before I could roll it out of the room.

I don’t have a photo of when it was black, but here is one when it was green.
It is in the room that is now the guest room and I realized it wouldn’t work in there.
You can see the guest room transformation here.
If you like that transformation, be sure to check out the Essentials Every Guest Room Needs.
Then, I moved it into the family room. That is where it is now in its beautiful new state.
This is when I had just starting painting.
I seriously thought about painting it a pale pink, but decided to go with white with a pearl top coat.
As much as I love pink, I’m pretty sure the white will have a longer life than pink.
I just used my usual furniture painting procedure.
If you are new here, this is my go to painting procedure. Remember I am not an expert and this is just what I do and what works for me. I’m sure it is totally wrong. It is fast and easy. If you hang around me any time at all you will realize I’m all about fast and easy.
My Fast and Easy Furniture Painting Procedure
- Clean piece thoroughly
- Wipe the whole piece down with alcohol
- Let dry
- Prime
- Let dry
- Paint with paint and primer combination

- Sand lightly and wipe down if a second coat is needed

- Add new hardware
- Line inside of drawers – those can be painted too
- Stand back and admire your new furniture and think to yourself, why did I wait so long!?

Tadaaaaa….. Here she is!
I added this pearl finish topcoat.
It is the same finish I used on the dresser in the Guest Room Makeover.
Close up of the knobs….
I put the Roomba under the armoire, so it is a little bit out of the way.
It looks like Dolli likes looking at herself.
I found this pretty paper and lined the drawers. Thinking maybe I should paint the inside of the drawers too.
Hmmmm….
What do you think?
I already have an idea for another armoire makeover. It isn’t an antique though.
Do you have an antique armoire you want to makeover?
I found a couple armoires that look like this one and also one from Pottery Barn that I would love to have. I think mine must have had a mirror on the small door at one time.

I have one of these that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. My mom has it at her house, but every time I see someone make one look as beautiful as yours, I think I want to get mine back and refurb it! This is beautiful!
